(AP Photo\/Ahn Young-joon)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>2026-04-17T04:24:51Z<\/p>\n<p>HONG KONG (AP) \u2014 Asian stocks were lower Friday even after Wall Street set another record, as investors watched for signs of more U.S.-Iran talks and an extension of the ceasefire of the <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\">Iran war<\/a><\/span> that is expiring next week.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices fell Friday, while U.S. futures edged up modestly.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo\u2019s Nikkei 225 fell 1% to 58,930.87 after reaching an all-time high on Thursday. South Korea\u2019s Kospi was 0.6% lower at 6,191.19. Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng dropped 1% to 26,126.86, while the Shanghai Composite index edged down 0.1% to 4,051.45.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s S&amp;P\/ASX 200 lost 0.3%, while Taiwan\u2019s Taiex traded 0.5% lower.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that he\u2019s <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-16-2026#0000019d-9791-d8f5-a19f-f7d7fc0a0000\">open to extending<\/a><\/span> the two-week ceasefire in the Iran war, and Iran\u2019s U.N. envoy said Tehran <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-16-2026#0000019d-97ee-d837-a3dd-bfefaf0b0000\">remained<\/a><\/span> \u201ccautiously optimistic\u201d over negotiations with the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>As optimism over an extended ceasefire grew, oil prices fell early Friday after climbing a day earlier. Brent crude, the international standard, was 1.1% lower at $98.31 per barrel. It had surged roughly 40% since the beginning of the Iran war in late February. Benchmark U.S. crude was down 1.4% to $89.90 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p>Global energy shocks are growing over impacts of the Iran war, with the <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/the-worlds-most-important-21-miles-0000019d2fbfd29daffdefffc72e0000\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a><\/span> remaining largely closed while the U.S. <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-iran-war-navy-blockade-strait-of-hormuz-5ede64fed469d3cf99524976183e3bfc\">imposed a sea blockade<\/a><\/span> on Iranian ports. The head of the International Energy Agency <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-europe-jet-fuel-flight-cancellations-birol-6e67fafd493861b3858de5548aa77703\">told<\/a><\/span> The Associated Press on Thursday that Europe has \u201cmaybe six weeks or so\u201d of jet fuel supplies remaining and warned of flight cancellations \u201csoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Wall Street <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-trump-oil-iran-war-210b81a3613f43d024eb80a7928514c7\">set another record<\/a><\/span> with the benchmark S&amp;P 500 closing 0.3% higher at 7,041.28, just a day after it eclipsed its previous all-time high in January. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2% to 48,578.72, and the tech-focused Nasdaq composite added 0.4% to 24,102.70.<\/p>\n<p>    <a><\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- AP \"Read More\" embed (place mid-article) --><\/p>\n<p>  <button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><br \/>\n    Read More <span aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/button><\/p>\n<p>Shares of PepsiCo gained 2.3% following its announcement of better-than-expected quarterly results. U.S. logistics company J.B. Hunt Transport Services was 6.3% higher also on stronger-than-expected results.<\/p>\n<p>In other dealings, gold and silver prices were up. Gold\u2019s price was 0.1% higher at $4,814.60 an ounce, while silver prices gained 0.4% to $79.04 per ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. dollar rose to 159.43 Japanese yen from 159.17 yen.
