(AP Photo \/ Hannah Fingerhut)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>2026-09-05T11:21:05Z<\/p>\n<p>DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) \u2014 Alongside the familiar sounds of roosters crowing and thrill seekers screaming on rides at the Iowa State Fair, there was a chorus of boos from Turning Point Action activists who were heckling Democratic politicians making their way through the crowds. <\/p>\n<p>Videos of the confrontations got hundreds of thousands of views on social media, a burst of attention for a conservative youth organization that is charting its next chapter after <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/charlie-kirk-conservative-activist-shot-546165a8151104e0938a5e085be1e8bd\">last year\u2019s assassination<\/a><\/span> of its leader <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/charlie-kirk-turning-point-trump-cf2a68e4303c5628299ffe383d09c1e9\">Charlie Kirk<\/a><\/span>. But the true test of Turning Point Action\u2019s clout was unfolding inside the exhibition center, where staff members were registering voters, handing out buttons and signing people up for social events. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding the foundation for 2028,\u201d said one of the flyers. <\/p>\n<p>While Democrats have <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iowa-caucus-democrats-2028-calendar-14d56615a1dd21c8f2bb19d7683d538d\">punted Iowa<\/a><\/span> from the top of its <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/democratic-national-committee-2028-calendar-aaaa979aaeaf678f1510f06017c69c43\">presidential primary calendar<\/a><\/span>, the state\u2019s caucuses will still kick off Republicans\u2019 next nominating process. Turning Point Action is positioning itself to shape that contest, a reminder that preparations for the next White House campaign are already in motion even though no candidates have announced and the <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/elections\">midterm elections<\/a><\/span> aren\u2019t over yet.<\/p>\n<p>Turning Point Action wants at least one staffer in each of Iowa\u2019s 99 counties to mobilize the conservative grassroots. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to us to see high voter participation in the caucuses,\u201d said Tyler Bowyer, the organization\u2019s chief operating officer. \u201cThat\u2019s your measuring stick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Iowa, Turning Point Action grew its footprint in New Hampshire and Nevada for this year\u2019s midterms, which could also help in 2028. <\/p>\n<p>    <a><\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- AP \"Read More\" embed (place mid-article) --><\/p>\n<p>  <button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><br \/>\n    Read More <span aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/button><\/p>\n<p>The likely beneficiary of this initiative would be Vice President <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jd-vance\">JD Vance<\/a><\/span>, who is <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vance-iowa-zach-nunn-2028-presidential-race-c69b0153f7c9e4fa7bb043ad08dca927\">widely expected to launch<\/a><\/span> a campaign. And many of us complained,\u201d said Kelley Koch, a former Dallas County Republican chair, to a gathering of MAGA Nation Iowa, the grassroots organization she founded. \u201cFinally, Turning Point Action listened to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Early state investments could benefit Vance<\/h2>\n<p>When asked about his 2028 ambitions, Vance demurs and says he\u2019s focused on his current job, but he\u2019s expected to be an immediate Republican frontrunner if he decides to seek the presidency. Bowyer said Turning Point Action wants to be supportive without \u201cbeing pushy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t officially endorsed as an organization yet because no one\u2019s announced, right? But, you know, depending on who announces and when we endorse \u2014 yeah, of course we\u2019ll be out campaigning on behalf of who we endorse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bowyer said Vance can bridge the gap between the Make America Great Again movement, which Trump launched more than a decade ago, and younger voters who were attracted to Charlie Kirk\u2019s brand of conservatism. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a natural fit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bowyer acknowledged that Turning Point Action\u2019s growing infrastructure in early primary states could cause some agitation on the right if it is seen as throwing its weight behind one presidential candidate. But, he said \u201cthat\u2019s not why we do it,\u201d describing the goal as boosting turnout in the Iowa caucuses to send a strong signal heading into the general election.<\/p>\n<p>Other potential candidates include <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/marco-rubio\">Marco Rubio<\/a><\/span>, Trump\u2019s secretary of state. However, Rubio has said he wouldn\u2019t run against Vance. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ted-cruz\">Ted Cruz<\/a><\/span> has not announced a campaign, but he has already made several visits to Iowa this year and said in a recent podcast hosted by Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick that, \u201cIt\u2019s no secret that I want to be president.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2>New staff on the ground in Iowa look to grow the grassroots<\/h2>\n<p>Although Iowa has shifted rightward over the last decade, it\u2019s considered a <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iowa-battleground-democrats-vance-trump-2026-election-a3fcfb9bffc6dd3d99db09a9f91e177d\">political battleground<\/a><\/span> in this year\u2019s midterm elections because of Trump\u2019s sagging approval ratings, declining access to healthcare and tariff-driven turmoil in the agricultural industry.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Joni Ernst and Gov. Kim Reynolds, both Republicans, are retiring, and there are fiercely contested races to replace them. Democrat Josh Turek and Republican Ashley Hinson are <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iowa-primary-sand-turek-wahls-hinson-feenstra-e7dd0976adce33da4424c75e1533e0fb\">seeking the Senate seat<\/a><\/span>, while Democrat <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rob-sand-iowa-governor-democrat-andy-beshear-1cff6f090f71f248e42a9463f69a4d24\">Rob Sand<\/a><\/span> and Republican <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iowa-governor-zach-lahn-rob-sand-c71779c71f392d0a5baa03ec204ef2ac\">Zach Lahn<\/a><\/span> want to be governor. Two battleground congressional districts will help determine control of the House as well. <\/p>\n<p>The spotlight on Iowa this year is an opportunity for Turning Point Action to demonstrate its clout.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said it hired four staffers on the ground last year. After Lahn\u2019s <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lahn-feenstra-trump-iowa-maha-kennedy-ea3de424608b7379791da0608a431169\">surprise win<\/a><\/span> over Trump-endorsed Rep. Randy Feenstra, Turning Point Action said it would double its manpower in the state before the midterms.<\/p>\n<p>Young activists regularly post on social media from county fairs and Republican committee meetings. They upload selfies on sidewalks or stoops to show days spent knocking on doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re newer in Iowa,\u201d a Des Moines-based senior field staffer, Kylie Kloewer, told a visitor who stopped by Turning Point Action\u2019s booth at the state fair.<\/p>\n<p>The booth featured signs emphasizing that there are only two genders and one that said \u201cmen can\u2019t get pregnant,\u201d the kind of confrontational culture war messaging that Charlie Kirk practiced on college campuses. Some people nodded and chuckled, while others raised their eyebrows as they wandered by. <\/p>\n<p>Those who walked up to the table could sign up for social clubs that host events, including barbecues and volleyball games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny involvement is success,\u201d said Kelsey Newberry, who is based in the organization\u2019s Phoenix headquarters and was helping at the Iowa State Fair. \u201cYou\u2019re bringing people together as a community.
