(AP Photo\/Themba Hadebe, File)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>2026-09-03T10:37:15Z<\/p>\n<p>JOHANNESBURG (AP) \u2014 <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-5c313bfec6494f68a4e4c50fae5c955f\">Enos Mafokate<\/a><\/span>, South Africa\u2019s first Black show jumping champion and veteran equestrian, has died at the age of 80, his family announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Mafokate broke racial barriers in a sport that was dominated by white riders during South Africa\u2019s <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/south-africa-apartheid-freedom-democracy-election-d9269650c2d2c813e9794fda145ef22d\">decades of apartheid<\/a><\/span>. He was widely known as \u201cKgosi ya Dipere,\u201d a Sesotho language phrase which translates to \u201dKing of Horses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis journey was shaped by several leading figures in South African equestrian sport who recognised his extraordinary ability and, at critical moments, supported him as he challenged the racial barriers of the time,\u201d his family said in statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mafokate started out as a stablehand. He won his first riding competition in 1963 but the country\u2019s segregation laws prevented him from taking part in further competitions until 1975.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980, he was the first Black South African man to compete internationally as a show jumper, placing fifth out of 31 riders at the Royal International Horse Show at Wembley.<\/p>\n<p>After apartheid was dismantled in 1991 and the IOC readmitted South Africa to the Olympics, his service was recognized when he went to the 1992 Barcelona Games as a sports ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis journey took him from the harsh realities of apartheid South Africa to competing internationally as a showjumper,\u201d his family said. \u201cYet the significance of his life extended far beyond his own achievements in the arena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He spent his latter years developing young Black riders in Soweto township through the Soweto Equestrian Centre, a horse riding school he established in 2006.
