(Photo by Charles Sykes\/Invision\/AP, File)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>2026-08-04T00:04:58Z<\/p>\n<p>Sharyn Alfonsi and Scott Pelley, two of the correspondents ousted from \u201c60 Minutes\u201d as part of <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cbs-60-minutes-bari-weiss-bilton-0afb86888cccd9e47a3e103a88984bba\">a major shakeup<\/a><\/span> at the storied CBS News show, are moving from the newsroom to the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Columbia Journalism School announced Monday that the two would serve as Journalists in Residence for the upcoming academic year.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the school said the two, who both <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cbs-60-minutes-firing-pelley-bari-weiss-e8a03ec812c878d7eb61237ae2f339af\">lost their \u201c60 Minutes\u201d jobs two months ago<\/a><\/span> amid changes imposed by CBS News\u2019 editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, would in their part-time positions advise and mentor students, give lectures and contribute to the Columbia Journalism Review, among other things. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir appointments give CJS students access to two journalists whose reporting has shaped the national conversation for decades,\u201d the statement said. \u201cAlfonsi and Pelley have covered many of the defining stories of our time \u2014 from war and politics to public health, criminal justice and international affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Jelani Cobb, dean of the journalism school, said he had reached out to Pelley the day after he was fired in early June after he confronted CBS News leadership about the changes instituted by Weiss. That included replacing the show\u2019s executive producer, Tanya Simon, with Nick Bilton, who had little substantial broadcast TV experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the responsibilities of my job is to have an eye out for talent that\u2019s available,\u201d Cobb said. \u201cThe caliber of their investigative work was just unparalleled. \u201860 Minutes\u2019 is the preeminent investigative broadcast news show for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made quickly, and then was kept under wraps in order to announce the news closer to the beginning of the academic year, Cobb said.<\/p>\n<p>    <a><\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <!-- AP \"Read More\" embed (place mid-article) --><\/p>\n<p>  <button type=\"button\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><br \/>\n    Read More <span aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><br \/>\n  <\/button><\/p>\n<p>In a statement released by the school, Alfonsi, who spent more than a decade reporting for \u201c60 Minutes\u201d before the show failed to renew her contract this year, called the new position \u201can extraordinary privilege, especially at a time when deep, rigorous and fearless reporting has never been more vital.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to work with the next generation of journalists who are eager to ask the tough questions that hold power accountable,\u201d Alfonsi said.<\/p>\n<p>Pelley, who anchored \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d and spent more than 37 years at the network, 27 of them at \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d noted in his statement that it was \u201ca critical time for a free press.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColumbia is leading the way in training the next generation of great journalists and I am honored to join Sharyn in that vital cause,\u201d Pelley said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to their work advising and mentoring students, Alfonsi and Pelley will participate in a Nov. 11 dialogue moderated by Cobb, the dean said.<\/p>\n<p>That panel will discuss \u201csignificant stories that they\u2019ve done over the course of their careers, what they\u2019ve learned as journalists, how they have navigated different ethical conflicts that have come up \u2014 the things that they\u2019ve learned over the course of their careers,\u201d Cobb said. <\/p>\n<p>At \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d meanwhile, <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cbs-news-60-minutes-e422da503e94ff9db4e76c7f5e7df534\">a new slate of correspondents has been announced<\/a><\/span> ahead of the show\u2019s 59th season.<\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/author\/jocelyn-noveck\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"JOCELYN NOVECK\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/dims.apnews.com\/dims4\/default\/5bd088b\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2574x2574+0+44\/resize\/100x100!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.apnews.com%2F43%2F0a%2F275dcd3c4b08b455552d4180b744%2Fcp21455-jocelyn-noveck.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        <\/p>\n<p>                <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/author\/jocelyn-noveck\">JOCELYN NOVECK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>                Noveck is an Associated Press national writer specializing in culture and gender, and a film critic.<\/p>\n<p>                        <a rel=\"noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JocelynNoveckAP\" target=\"_blank\" data-social-service=\"twitter\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>        <svg><\/svg><\/p>\n<p>        <\/p>\n<p>    <span><br \/>\n        twitter<br \/>\n    <\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>                        <a rel=\"noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/cdn-cgi\/l\/email-protection#a2c8cccdd4c7c1c9e2c3d28ccdd0c5\" target=\"_blank\" data-social-service=\"mailto\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>        <svg><\/svg><\/p>\n<p>        <\/p>\n<p>    <span><br \/>\n        mailto<br \/>\n    <\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scott Pelley, anchor of &#8220;CBS Evening News,&#8221; poses in New York, May 15, 2013.
