(AP Photo\/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>2026-07-03T19:38:26Z<\/p>\n<p>RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) \u2014 Brazil\u2019s President <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/luiz-inacio-lula-da-silva\">Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/a><\/span> and his rival Sen. <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-bolsonaro-succession-senator-flavio-bolsonaro-4e2023374e4f4c186477562d6e6d6bfc\">Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro<\/a><\/span> clashed over U.S. tariffs this week, as both sought to discourage the Trump administration from following through with its proposal of applying taxes of <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-trump-tariffs-trade-3f389d69e8706d773ed19eb4de6a4726\">25% on Brazilian products<\/a><\/span> despite an extensive U.S. trade surplus.<\/p>\n<p>The two top candidates for October\u2019s presidential election traded barbs over their responses, suggesting that they believe how they are perceived as handling the deeply unpopular U.S. tariffs will be a key factor in the vote.<\/p>\n<p>While Sen. Bolsonaro, son of former President <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jair-bolsonaro\">Jair Bolsonaro<\/a><\/span>, emphasized that the tariffs would strengthen Lula, Brazil\u2019s government rebuked the argument that its trade policies are unreasonable, discriminatory or burdensome to U.S. commerce.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tariffs-eu-trading-partners-letter-958bafd5f28d600eb0dd55fa8e942f64\">first imposed a 50% tariff<\/a><\/span> on Brazilian imports last July, citing a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against Jair Bolsonaro, who was on trial at the time for attempting a coup despite <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jair-bolsonaro-religion-caribbean-voting-ed2130a095ca42ff1be324a3dea9f355\">his 2022 electoral defeat<\/a><\/span> to Lula and <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jair-bolsonaro-coup-trial-convicted-what-to-know-ed1667f26c809b1cfa01aa0f791ba824\">was later convicted.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In his letter, U.S. President Donald Trump also accused <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/brazil\">Brazil<\/a><\/span> of unfair trade practices and said he had directed U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to initiate an investigation, which led the office to charge Brazil with lax anti-corruption enforcement and unfair tariffs, among other things, in June. It said its practices are lawful, neutral and promote competition.<\/p>\n<p>Lula and Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro have also clashed over the Trump administration\u2019s decision to classify two of Brazil\u2019s main organized crime groups \u2014 First Command of the Capital, known as PCC, and Red Command \u2014 as <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-pcc-comando-vermelho-foreign-terrorist-organizations-trump-68fe261fa5ab6980864405345970f68f\">terrorist organizations<\/a><\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Bolsonaro supported the move, which some experts saw as a <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-us-bolsonaro-lula-designations-crime-6ef4f1467c6afb55fc2daf45ae6d3875\">U.S. attempt to interfere in the election<\/a><\/span>.
