(AP Photo\/Ahn Young-joon)<\/small><\/p>\n<p>2026-06-12T04:29:12Z<\/p>\n<p>HONG KONG (AP) \u2014 Asian shares climbed sharply on Friday, tracking big Wall Street gains, and oil prices slipped after U.S. President Donald Trump <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-ceasefire-hezbollah-israel-11-june-2026-3c2c6d356a1e25b4d7edf66b2edba57d\">claimed there was a breakthrough<\/a><\/span> in talks to end the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. futures edged higher. <\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s Kospi jumped 7.8% to 8,370.82, narrowing losses from earlier this month from sell-offs of shares related to <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial intelligence.<\/a><\/span> The Kospi has roughly doubled over the past six months, with a record closing high of 8.801.49 on June 2.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung Electronics, South Korea\u2019s most valuable company, advanced 11.2%. Computer chipmaker SK Hynix rose 7.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo\u2019s Nikkei\u2019s 225 gained 3.5% to 66,442.95, also led by gains for technology stocks. SoftBank Group, a multinational investment holding company with a strong AI focus, was up 2%. Chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron jumped 10.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng gained 1.8% to 24,689.32 and the Shanghai Composite index rose 1.6% to 4,050.51.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, the S&amp;P\/ASX 200 traded 1.9% higher to 8,798.10.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s Taiex gained 2.6%, while India\u2019s Sensex advanced 1.2%. <\/p>\n<p>The renewed investor optimism came after Trump said Thursday he <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/trump-administration-updates-06-11-2026\">had called off military strikes<\/a><\/span> against Iran. He asserted that the U.S. had made \u201ca great settlement of the war with Iran,\u201d adding that an extension of the shaky ceasefire between the two sides could be finalized in \u201cthe next few days.\u201d Few details were offered.<\/p>\n<p>Global markets retreated earlier in the week as tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated. That was still much higher than the roughly $70 a barrel level it was at before the war began in late February.<\/p>\n<p>Benchmark U.S. crude shed 1.6% to $86.33 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Wall Street\u2019s benchmark S&amp;P 500 surged 1.8% to 7,394.30, <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-ai-iran-oil-rates-87c831451197beedb3e29771de1e0a92\">back to where it was<\/a><\/span> in early May. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 1.9% to 50,848.75, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 2.5% to 25,809.66.<\/p>\n<p>Prices of AI and other tech stocks <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-markets-ai-tech-iran-0446d424c0bf722dd5b09d70b8a1da3d\">have been volatile<\/a><\/span> the past week in part due to renewed worries that massive investments and soaring share prices are creating a bubble liable to burst. On Thursday, U.S. chipmaker Marvell Technology climbed 11.1%, but technology company Oracle lost 8.5% on worries over its high spending, despite strong-than-expected quarterly results.<\/p>\n<p>Investors in the U.S. and elsewhere are also awaiting the big debut Friday on Wall Street of SpaceX, Elon Musk\u2019s rocket company, which is set to become the largest IPO on record, <span><a data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/spacex-musk-starship-ipo-satellites-data-center-293e82ea0216efdd0ff7601baf85bae8\">raising around $75 billion<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In other dealings early Friday, the U.S. dollar rose to 160.22 Japanese yen from 159.93 yen.
